Crockput French Dip Sandwiches

Finally, a meal I remember to blog about! This is an excellent slow cooker meal if you are going to be busy all day. Just a few minutes of prep in the morning and you're pretty much set minus putting the sandwiches together. I thought they were great paired with some frozen fries, but you could fancy up your side dish if you like!

Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches
Ingredients:

1 medium yellow onion, sliced thick
1 1/2 cup beef broth/stock
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 cup water
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
3-4 lb boneless beef chuck roast
salt and pepper
sandwich rolls (I used ciabatta rolls)
provolone slices

Directions:

Keeping the onion rounds in tact, place in bottom of crockpot. Add all liquid ingredients to crockpot.

Salt and pepper both sides of the roast and place on top of the onions.

Cook on low for 6-8 hours, until beef is fall-apart tender.

Transfer beef to a large mixing bowl and shred with two forks. Remove onions and set aside.

Skim fat from top of jus. Return shredded beef to the crockpot (on “keep warm” setting) until ready to serve.

Preheat broiler. Place split rolls on baking sheet and toast for 1-2 minutes or until they begin to brown.

Remove tops from pan. Scoop beef and onions onto the bottoms of the rolls and top with cheese.

Return to oven just until cheese is melted. Top with bun tops and serve with jus.

Savvy Holiday Shopping

Fall has arrived! The cool weather is creeping in. Some people are beginning to think about their holiday shopping. While the holidays are usually fun, it can also bring a lot of stress, as Christmas can definitely take a nice chunk out of your bank account.

Here are some ways to reduce holiday financial woes:

Tip #1: Shop year round and be on the lookout! I visit Target at least once a week (but this also applies to Walmart, Kmart, etc) I am always on the lookout for their clearance sections, especially in the Toy and Kids Clothing section. There are almost always clothes for kids marked down anywhere between 30-75% off. It's usually whatever season is finishing up. So as the stores are getting ready for fall and winter, all their warm weather clothing is seriously cheap! For example I was able to score this today in the 75% off section:

A kid's pajama set and a bathing suit (for my little neices) as well as two shirts (for my bigger neices) - all for under $2 a piece!

The swimsuit I will save for summertime - the but the other three will make great inexpensive Christmas gifts! No one has to know how cheap they were!

*Note* It's always good to buy the next size up since the kid is likely to grow by the time you actually give them the clothes!

Tip #2: The dollar bin is your friend! You can easily assemble cheap "filler" gifts from a Dollar store or the Dollar bin at Target/Walmart. For example - I found a Star Wars puzzle and a Star Wars yo-yo - both $1 each. These can easily be wrapped up together as a nice little gift for a Star Wars fan.

My favorite dollar bin gifts: Hats and gloves! I give these as gifts every year. Kids don't keep track of things. They will likely only be able to scrounge up one glove the first time they want to play in the snow. These are both inexpensive and practical - my favorite kind of gift!

These were all $1 a piece. So for $6, I have a useful gift for 3 different kids! Score!

Tip #3: Chill out! Try not to get caught up in the whole gift hype. Kids don't NEED everything. It's very likely that they have presents from last year still sitting in an unopened box or that Tickle-me ZuZu Pet Furby they just HAD to have hasn't been touched in months. Get them that one "big ticket" gift that they really want (but no, not a pony), but then spend money on practical stuff that's worth it. Half the thrill is ripping the wrapping off the box anyway.

Another lesson in Couponing

I wish I had thought to take some pictures while I was shopping, but alas, I did not. So here is a little story about how you can score some good deals with coupons.

Tip #1: Keep your eyes open!

So I was in the commissary this weekend. They always have tons of coupons on tearpads right next to the products - it doesn't hurt to check them out.

They had Kraft BBQ on sale for 88 cents, which is a steal in itself, BUT they also had 50cent off 1 Kraft BBQ sauce coupons right next to product! So now you can score an even better deal - 38cents for BBQ sauce!

However, upon further inspection, I saw that the bottles of BBQ sauce had coupons attached to them! (This is why I wish I had taken a picture). I peeled it off and it was for $1 off Kraft Salad Dressing with the purchase of this BBQ sauce. Well, I was in the condiment section anyway, so I moseyed over to see how much the Kraft dressing was. Lo and behold - it was on sale for $1.60! So with my coupon, I got it for 60cents! YAY!

Tip #2! Look for trial/smaller sizes!

Another great way to score a deal is to see if you can apply a coupon to a smaller sized product. I found tearpad coupons for 50cents off Softsoap bodywash right next to the big bottles of bosywash that go for around $3. However, I also happened to notice in the seasonal aisle that there were smaller bottles of Softsoap bodywash for only 80cents! Therefore, I could score bodywash for only 30cents with coupon! Woo!

*Note:* Read the coupon! Sometimes there are size restrictions!

Another fantastic deal I found was Playtex Tampons for $2.02. I'm not sure if this was a sale or regular price. I happen to have coupons from the Sunday paper for $2 off a box - making them 2 cents a piece! Score!!!!

So in total I got 5 BBQ sauces, 5 salad dressings, 5 body washes and 4 boxes of tampons for a grand total of $6.48!!!

I really couldn't resist such great deals. However, I am not a crazy stock pile lady - I have no room for that! I also don't really NEED all that BBQ sauce or body wash.  I will pass on the savings to some family members because hey, who doesn't like free stuff!

Homemade Bloomin' Onion!

I know, I know.... life has gotten busy and I've been slacking on my blog. I have also been slacking on the "meal" portion of this blog. Time to rectify that.

So this weekend I attempted a homemade version of one of our favorite appetizers - The Bloomin' Onion from Outback Steakhouse.

It definitely wasn't perfect and half of my onion fell off - but not too bad for a first try!

80% Off Restaurant.com Certificates!

Restaurant.com is already a great place to score a discount on local restaurants - but the constantly have promotions going on to make the deal even sweeter!

Generally, you can score a $25 gift certificate for only $10 - that's already some sweet savings. However, from now until August 16, you can get 80% off! Use promo code HOT at checkout. You can score a $25 gift certificates for $2!!!

If you have never used Restaurant.com before this would be a good time to check it out! The choices consist of local eateries - so you aren't going to find big chains like TGI Fridays, etc. This is a great way to try a new place. You are only spending $2, so it's not too big of a risk! You can always look at the menu or reviews of the website before deciding to purchase.

NOTE: Participating restaurants often have some sort of limitation (ie: not valid on Saturday or minimum purchase of $50, etc), so read the fine print before purchasing.

These certificates also never expire, so you can use them whenever you want!

I for one have used several of these certificates without a problem! My hubby and I went to a restuarant with a $25 gift certificate that I had paid $2 for. There was a limitation that we had to spend at least $50. So we spent right around that, and ended up only paying $27 for a $50 meal. Cheap dinner date!

A lesson in Couponing....

I feel like ever since "Extreme Couponing" came out, couponing has gotten the bad rap that we’re all crazy organized hoarders. NOT the case. In reality, those people find an amazing deal on only 4 or 5 things, and then somehow get coupons to buy 100 of them. So yes, they are saving a lot of money, but most of it is stuff they don’t need (or don’t need that much of).

I think the majority of couponers are not that crazy. I love a good deal, but I don’t have the patience or the time to run to 6 different stores to score 6 different deals. I do all my grocery shopping at one store (the commissary) minus a random run to Safeway for milk or whatever.
You too can save money without being a whacko! For example, I had a bunch of good coupons that were going to expire on 7/31, so I made a special trip to go out to use them. Here is my haul:

I normally buy ALOT more food than this, but like I said, this was a special trip just to use those coupons up. I wont list everything, but as you can see I got some everyday staples (cereal, shave gel, toilet paper, etc). I do double up on coupons (as I did here) if I can to stock up, but I definitely don't need 50 of anything.

Overall I saved 47%! Here's proof:

That's HUGE for me. Like I said I normally buy a lot more food and my savings are usually around 20%. No, I did not get my bill down to the pennies, but I only paid $70 for about $130 worth of stuff! That makes couponing so worth it!

So if you are new to this whole thing - you don't have to go crazy hunting for every deal. Just go to your normal store and use coupons for stuff you will use. If it's a great deal and you have multiple coupons - get 2 or 3. It doesn't hurt to stock up, just don't crazy - it doesn't leave any for anyone else!

Tuesday, August 02, 2011

10% Off at Half.com!

Even better, you can use the cose BTSAUG10A and get an additional 10% off your order of $50 or more! Offer ends August 30.

Penne with Spicy Vodka Tomato Cream Sauce

Okay, so I am slacking on the meal part of this blog. Time for a recipe!

Here is good weekday recipe with fairly basic ingredients. It's a nice change if you want an easy pasta dish that isn't spaghetti and meatballs.  Bonus: It only take about 25-30 min and it makes a lot - and leftovers make good lunches!

(Originally found on Allrecipes)

Penne with Spicy Vodka Tomato Cream Sauce

You will need:

Ingredients

  • 1 pound uncooked penne pasta (or whatever noodles you have on hand)
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vodka
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 5 links sweet Italian sausage (I use sweet Italian Turkey Sausage to make it a little healthier)

Directions

  1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.
  2. In large skillet, heat oil over moderate heat. Remove casing from sausage and add to skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat, until brown. Add garlic and red pepper and cook, stirring until garlic is golden brown.
  3. Add tomatoes and salt; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes.
  4. Add vodka and cream and bring to boil. Reduce heat to low and add pasta, toss for 1 minute. Stir in fresh parsley and serve!
Notes:
If you want more of a spicy kick, add more red pepper flakes! If you don't like spicy at all - omit them. Also, the vodka burns off and you don't really taste it - so if that is a concern, then it shouldn't be!

$10 for $20 at Old Navy! Sweet deal!

This is bound to pop up on a lot of money-savings blogs but it's a pretty sweet Groupon!

You can get $20 worth of apparel at Old Navy for only $10! That's like a FREE $10! It's very rare to see a chain retail store on Groupon and if you shop there regularly I would definitely take advantage of this deal!

Note: Usually when you purchase a Groupon you have 6 months to a year to use them, but this one expires July 30th!

You have to be a Groupon member to get the deal. If you are unfamiliar with Groupon, it's a site that offers a different deal every day for a variety of major cities. Sometimes the deals are for local restaurants, events, shopping....and a variety of things. Sometimes they are national (like this one) and you can use them anywhere.

You purchase the deal and (usually after a day) they provide you a pdf "certificate" to print out and redeem at the business. I have used several Groupons and have never had a problem!
